Background of the Study
Medication adherence is crucial in the management of chronic and acute illnesses, as non-adherence can lead to poor health outcomes, increased hospitalizations, and higher healthcare costs (Nieuwlaat et al., 2023). In hospital settings, ensuring that inpatients adhere to prescribed medications is essential for effective treatment, yet non-adherence remains a widespread issue (Brown & Bussell, 2023). Factors such as forgetfulness, lack of understanding about medications, side effects, and poor communication between healthcare providers and patients contribute to non-adherence.
Nurses play a pivotal role in promoting medication adherence through patient education, counseling, and monitoring (Richards et al., 2024). Nurse-led interventions, such as individualized education programs, medication reminders, and motivational strategies, have been shown to significantly improve adherence rates (Hansen et al., 2024). These interventions empower patients by increasing their knowledge about medications, addressing concerns, and fostering a sense of accountability.
In Nasarawa State, hospitals face challenges such as high patient-to-nurse ratios, limited access to resources, and inadequate patient education programs, which may contribute to low medication adherence (Aliyu et al., 2024). While some studies have highlighted the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions in other regions, there is limited research assessing their impact in Nasarawa State. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions in improving medication adherence among inpatients in the region.
Statement of the Problem
Medication non-adherence among inpatients remains a significant challenge in Nasarawa State, contributing to prolonged hospital stays, increased healthcare costs, and suboptimal treatment outcomes (Yakubu et al., 2023). Despite the critical role nurses play in medication management, many hospitals lack structured nurse-led adherence programs. Additionally, patient-related barriers, such as low health literacy and fear of side effects, further exacerbate the issue (Obasi & Lawal, 2024).
Existing hospital protocols may not be sufficiently patient-centered, leading to missed doses and inconsistent medication use. Given the growing evidence supporting nurse-led interventions as effective strategies for improving adherence, it is necessary to examine their impact in Nasarawa State hospitals. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of these interventions and identify best practices for enhancing medication adherence.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the impact of nurse-led interventions on medication adherence among inpatients in Nasarawa State hospitals.
2. To identify barriers affecting medication adherence and evaluate how nurse-led strategies address them.
3. To recommend effective approaches for enhancing medication adherence through nurse-led interventions.
Research Questions
1. How effective are nurse-led interventions in improving medication adherence among inpatients in Nasarawa State?
2. What are the major barriers to medication adherence among inpatients?
3. What strategies can be implemented to enhance medication adherence through nurse-led interventions?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurse-led interventions significantly improve medication adherence among inpatients.
2. Patient-related and system-related factors contribute to medication non-adherence in Nasarawa State hospitals.
3. Implementing structured nurse-led programs will lead to a significant increase in medication adherence rates.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on inpatients in selected hospitals in Nasarawa State and assesses the role of nurses in promoting medication adherence. However, the study does not include outpatient populations, and its reliance on self-reported adherence rates may introduce bias. Additionally, variations in hospital policies may influence the findings.
Definitions of Terms
